Originally founded as Fukuoka Prefectural College for Women, it was reorganized as a four‐year university in 1950. The university initially comprised the Faculty of Liberal Arts and subsequently expanded in 1954 with the establishment of the Faculties of Literature and Home Economics.FWU has progressively strengthened its graduate education. The Graduate School of Literature was established in 1993, followed by the introduction of a doctoral program in English Literature in 1997. In 2000, the Graduate School of Human Environmental Sciences was created. In April 2006, the institution was incorporated as the Public University Corporation Fukuoka Women’s University. In response to globalization and evolving social demands, the university undertook a major restructuring of its academic organization in April 2011 with the formation of the International College of Arts and Sciences.
